Thank you for reading my blog. My name is Kira (I legally changed it), and I’m a transgender woman living in Lancashire, in the North West of England, UK.
History of my journey to becoming Transgender Woman
I was brought up in the 1970s/80s when Section 28 was in force. Section 28 was a law passed by the then Conservative government that banned all LGBT+ subjects in schools. So even though I knew I was different at the age of five, I did not know what I was.
Thanks to being in a religious family (I am adopted), I joined the British Army when I was 16 to get away from them, even though at the time it was illegal to be LGBT+ in the Army. I stayed there for 8 1/2 years. I had my first sexual encounter with a man while I was in the Army at the age of 20.
Since leaving the Army, I’ve been in exclusive relationships with women. However, when I was single, I occasionally had sex with men. Despite this, I’ve never been in a relationship with a man.
When my last relationship ended, I came out as a transgender woman because that’s who I am. Since then, I’ve never been happier with myself. Even some of my long-time friends have said I’ve never looked happier. I came out as transgender in February or March 2021. I started hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in May 2024 after going shared care with my GP and GenderGP.
I was part of the local Labour Party, fighting for transgender rights in the UK. I’ve been to protests in Manchester and the Labour Conference 2022 in Liverpool, and I work in my local CLP to try and change Westminster to be more supportive of our basic rights as transgender and non-binary human beings.
Although it’s taken me a while to sort out my sexuality, which is different from gender, I class myself as anything. You don’t need a label.
Politics
From January 2023 to December 2024, I was the LGBT+ Officer and Disability Officer for Blackburn Constituency Labour Party.
I was re-elected as the LGBT+ Officer for Blackburn CLP in 2024. I resigned from my position as the Disability Officer, which was taken over by someone else. After Wes Streeting, the then Health Secretary, decided to maintain the puberty blockers ban for trans children only in December 2024, I resigned from my position as LGBT+ Officer and from the Labour Party itself. While I generally support Labour’s actions, I cannot in good conscience remain with a party that seeks to make the lives of my community, the transgender community, more difficult.
So, with that in mind, in December 2024, I joined the Liberal Democrats, as they seem to be the only party that has a chance of making a change for the better for all transgender people in the UK. They have broadly very similar policies to Labour but without the stigma towards transgender people.
In October 2025 I left the LibDems to become a member of the Green Party as I am very supportive of the leader of the Party, Zack Polanski. His stance on Transgender Rights and wanting to bring the UK back into the EU made me join, especially after an Interview with Pierce Morgan where he defended Transgender Women fully.
Work Experience
As I mentioned earlier, I joined the Army when I was 16. I served for 8 1/2 years before leaving to work for a software company.
I worked for a software company for a few years before it was bought out. During that time, I also did a few security jobs while setting up my own computer services company.
I ran my own company for about five years before a company in Manchester bought it.
I worked for the company in Manchester for around 10 years as a senior systems administrator. I stayed there until I was diagnosed with PTSD from my service in the Army.
While working at the computer company in Manchester, I completed several computer courses specialising in networking. These courses primarily focused on integrating Apple servers and clients with Microsoft networks. They included courses up to and including MCSE on the Microsoft side, covering Windows 2000/XP, Small Business Server 2000/2003, and Server 2000/2003. Additionally, I completed ACA courses on the Apple side, covering Mac OSX Tiger/Leopard, Server, and Client. However, these qualifications are quite outdated these days.
I have been on disability ever since I got diagnosed.
Since June 2022 I have been a community news reader for TransRadio UK.
