Thanks for reading my blog. My name is Kira (I have changed my name legally), a Transgender Woman living in Lancashire in the North West of England, UK.
History of my journey to becoming Transgender Woman
I was brought up in the 1970s/80s when Section 28 was in force. Section 28 was a law passed by the then Conservative government that banned all LGBT+ subjects in schools. So even though I knew I was different at the age of 5 I did not know what I was.
Thanks to being in a religious family (I am adopted) I joined the British Army when I was 16 to get away from them even though at the time it was illegal to be LGBT+ in the Army at that time. I stayed there for 8 1/2 years. I had my first sexual encounter with a man while in the Army at the age of 20.
Since coming out of the Army I have had been in exclusive relationships with Women, although when single I did hook up with men every so often, I still to this day never been in a relationship with a man.
When my last relationship ended I came out as a Transgender Woman, as that is who I am. Since coming out I have never been happier in myself. Even some of my long time friends have said I have never looked happier than I do now. I “came out” as Transgender in February/March 2021. Started HRT in May 2024 after going private with GenderGP.
I am part of the local Labour Party, fighting for Transgender Rights in the UK. I have been to protests in Manchester, the Labour Conference 2022 in Liverpool and work in my local CLP to try and change Westminster to be more supportive of our basic rights as trans and non binary human beings.
Although it has taken me a while since coming out to sort out my sexuality, which is different to gender, I class myself as anything. You don’t need a label.
Politics
From January 2023 to December 2024 I was the LGBT+ Officer and Disability Officer for Blackburn Constituency Labour Party.
I was voted in again as LGBT+ Officer for Blackburn CLP in 2024. I gave up being the Disability Officer and it was taken over by someone else. After Wes Streeting, the Health Sec at the time, decided to keep the puberty blockers ban for trans kids only in December 2024 I resigned my position as LGBT+ Officer and from the Labour Party itself. While I broadly support what Labour are doing, I can not in good conciseness stay with a party that wants to make my community, the transgender community, lives harder.
So with that in mind in December 2024 I joined the Liberal Democrats as they seem to be the only party that has a chance of making a change for the better for all transgender people in the UK. They have broadly very similar policies to Labour but without the stigma towards transgender people.
