Post about the current state of being a trans person in the UK
Wes Streeting, the Labour shadow health secretary in the UK, recently did an interview on the BBC where he mentioned the trans community and that we need to listen to both sides.
He is a member of the LGBT+ community as he is in a gay relationship. So when he speaks on these matters I listen to him in 2 perspectives, as a trans woman and also as a fellow member of the LGBT+ community.
There has been out-range on twitter from both sides, the trans community and GC's. We trans people are people, who have the right to exist as we are. It is not our fault that we was born in the wrong body. GC's need to understand that BUT we as trans people also need to understand the fears that cis woman can have and educate people who are fearful of who we are, that we are no danger to them. While there are extreme views from both sides like there are in any discussion, I hope the middle ground win out. Also there will be bad apples on both sides also, BUT they are no where near the majority.
The trans population is about 500k last estimate in the UK, yet there are only 197 of us in prison. The vast majority of us just want to live our lives as who we are, a trans man or trans woman.
I think he said some very sensible things but to sum it up we should listen to both sides, and both sides should be sympathetic to each other. I recently wrote a twitter thread that I am going to put on here. This is my take on the discussion.
I have to agree with it. As a trans person I have to agree we have to discuss it. Yes, I am a woman in my mind BUT my body is a man. I want to use women's toilets etc but understand that cis women will be weary.
This is is what we have to change. Under the equality act I am allowed to use women's toilets but we also have to be compassionate about the situation as well.
I am a woman in mind, man in body, woman in gender, man in biological sex. BUT I am a woman. Also I am no danger to both. GC's (Gender Critical) need to take that into account as we, the trans community also has to take into account the fears of cis woman.
I hope that somehow, this can be solved. It will take a compromise from BOTH sides to do it just like the gay/lesbian movement (even though trans people was there from the very beginning) had to in the 80's and 90's.
