Pixel 5 Review
I have had the Pixel 5 for a few months now, upgraded from the Pixel 3a. Why did I not wait for the new pixel that will be released this year? Well there is 1 good reason for that. Google Photos.
The Pixel 5 will be the last device to get unlimited storage on hi-res photos taken on the device. This is even after Google starts to charge for storage of photos on every other device. It is for the lifetime of the device also.
Apart from that the other reason was storage. The Pixel 3a only had 64Gb of storage. Thanks to me having PTSD I need a device that has enough storage to store all my music on as well as the day to day stuff. I hate streaming services so I use Plex as my main music source and since I have the lifetime licence for it I download my music to my phone. My old Pixel 3a only had 10Gb of space left on it, and with taking photos and adding music constantly (I also use Amazon Music Prime) that space would not last a long time.
Hardware
The hardware is in my opinion good. They have extended the screen so it covers most of the front, its a 6" 1080x2340 at 423ppi. It has HDR support as well. It has a refresh rate of 90Htz that by default is set to 60Hrz unless you are scrolling etc to save battery life. It also has a "always on" display feature.
The front facing camera is a pinhole camera, which personally I prefer over the notch variety. Instead of unlocking with your face like the Pixel 4 it now brought back the fingerprint reader, which is in the same place as the Pixel 3a, so rests exactly where your finger is when you pick it up.
The battery is a 4000mAh affair that has a fast charger included in the box and can be charged up by wireless charging. It lasts all day in my use case (checking social media, YouTube Studio, Listening to a few hours of music via Bluetooth) and I usually have about 30-40% left.
The SoC is a Snapdragon 765G backed up by 8Gb of LPDDR4 Ram. Even though it is not a top of the line chip most people will not feel any difference between this and a 800 series.
The Cameras have changed from the previous Pixels, which all used the same camera system. The rear system as 2 cameras, a normal 12.2 MP at F1.7 that is the same as the rest of the Pixel line but also an added 16Mp Ultrawide at F2.2 and a field of view of 117 degrees. The front camera as a 8MP affair at F2.0. For video it can to 1080p@30/60/120FPS and 4k@30/60FPS.
The port is USB-C and it also has stereo speakers.
It can connect to 3/4/5G networks, has Bluetooth 5, NFC and GPS. There is only 1 storage option and thats 128Gb.
In real world use it is a very fast phone. I have not noticed any slowdowns in the phone since I got it a few months ago.
Software
As its a Pixel phone it comes with a clean version of Android and will get software updates for 3 years after release and will be on the latest Android Version. The software updates drop monthly for this phone.
Conclusion
As you would expect from a Pixel Phone, the cameras are top notch at taking photos, as Google as some of the best algorithms for photo manipulation.
For video its good, very good in fact but it can not compete with the iPhone in that department.
Overall, for a phone that is a flagship phone but priced at mid tier it is a bargain. When you take into account this will be the last Pixel that will have the unlimited Google Photos storage then would I recommend it? Well I have done don't I.
